Environmental values
Hosting that minimizes its environmental impact
100% of the energy used in our data centers comes from renewable sources, and we offset our entire operation's carbon footprint - not just servers, but also our office's electricity use, heating, commuting and equipment purchases.

How we offset
We plant trees in Finland
We offset our carbon emissions together with Puuni Oy, which reforests an amount of wasteland in Finland matching our emissions - at the Kovalansuo carbon sink in Mikkeli.
The plantings are deciduous-dominant groves and mixed forests: multi-species stands where broadleaf and noble trees ensure climate resilience and improve the forest's resistance to tree diseases and pests. The species diversity also provides ecological niches for a wide range of organisms. The forests are contractually committed as carbon sinks for at least 100 years.
Doing it the honest way
Real trees - real action
We wanted a concrete, traceable way to offset our emissions, not opaque emissions markets. That's why we plant real trees in Finnish soil, contractually secured for at least a hundred years - no certificate trading, just forest you can actually watch grow.
Our data centers
Renewable energy isn't the exception for us - it's the baseline
We offset our entire carbon footprint even though most of the data centers we use - for hosting and for backups alike - already run on renewable energy. We compensate our full share regardless, so our real carbon handprint may well be larger than the emissions we actually produce.
Helsinki
Our primary data centers: two UpCloud sites and one Hetzner site. The Hetzner site has run on 100% wind power (via Vantaan Energia) since 2018, and Finland's national grid is already one of Europe's cleanest.
Nuremberg and Falkenstein
Hetzner's German data centers, which we use for backups, have run on 100% hydroelectric power since 2008.
Stockholm
Our Swedish backup data center - over 98% of Sweden's electricity comes from hydro, nuclear and wind power.
London, Amsterdam, Warsaw and Madrid
Our other backup data centers within UpCloud's network - a Green Web Foundation-verified provider moving its fleet to renewable energy.
Efficiency reduces emissions
Energy-efficient virtual servers
We deliver our services on highly energy-efficient cloud servers - a virtual server's energy footprint is only a small fraction of what physical hardware would consume.
