Who can register a .fi domain?
Since the 2016 reform, anyone can register a .fi domain - regardless of citizenship or country of residence. There are still a few requirements worth knowing beforehand.
Who can register
Both private individuals and companies can register a .fi domain. Registration requires:
- a Finnish personal identity code for natural persons
- a Finnish business ID (Y-tunnus) for companies and organizations
- valid contact details (citizenship, address, contact information)
Always register in the actual user's name
A domain must not, at the time of registration, correspond to someone else's protected name or trademark without acceptable grounds. Always register the domain in the name of its actual, intended user - this matters especially when a third party, such as a web designer, places the order on a client's behalf: the order must be made in the end client's name, not the designer's.
Permitted characters
A .fi domain may use the letters a-z, digits 0-9, hyphens, and the Finnish (ä/ö/å) and Sámi special characters. A domain using special characters isn't recommended as your primary domain due to technical limitations - we recommend registering the international (Latin-character) version as primary and using the special-character version as a redirect alias to it.
Check for protected names beforehand
Before registering, it's worth checking the required registers to make sure your desired domain doesn't clash with a protected name: the Finnish Business Information System (YTJ), the Finnish Register of Associations, the Finnish Trademark Register (PRH), and the EU Trademark Register (EUIPO).

Checklist before transferring a domain
Transferring a domain to us is easy - here's how to prepare beforehand.
- .fi domain: request an intermediary change key from your current provider.
- .com, .net, .org and other extensions: ask your current provider for the Auth-ID, and to remove the domain lock and WHOIS privacy.
- Migrating your website and recreating email accounts is left to you - unless you transfer the site to our WP web hosting at the same time, in which case we migrate the site for you free of charge.
- Allow 1-7 business days for the domain transfer and nameserver changes to complete.
- If your website or email is business-critical, you can request a later transfer date when placing your order.
